Microsoft is once again facing scrutiny in the European Union, this time not due to Teams. An Austrian advocacy group called Noyb has lodged two complaints against Microsoft regarding the use of its 365 Education software in schools and the privacy of children. Noyb has a history of taking on tech giants like OpenAI, Meta, and Spotify.
Noyb claims that Microsoft 365 Education has “installed cookies that, as per Microsoft’s own documentation, analyze user behavior, gather browser data, and are utilized for advertising” without the schools’ awareness. The group also asserts that Microsoft is not transparent about its handling of students’ data and could be surreptitiously monitoring children.
“Our examination of the data flows is quite concerning. Microsoft 365 Education seems to be monitoring users regardless of their age,” stated Felix Mikolasch, a data protection attorney at Noyb. “This practice could impact hundreds of thousands of individuals.”
