EU uncovers Microsoft’s covert data collection of minors

Microsoft is once again facing scrutiny⁣ in the European Union, this time not due to Teams. An Austrian ⁢advocacy group⁤ called ⁢Noyb has lodged two complaints ⁤against Microsoft regarding ⁣the use of its ‍365 Education software in schools and the ⁣privacy of children. Noyb has a history of taking on tech giants like ‍OpenAI, ‍Meta, and Spotify.

Noyb‌ claims that Microsoft 365 ⁣Education‍ has “installed cookies that, as per Microsoft’s own documentation, ⁣analyze user behavior, gather browser data, and are utilized for ⁢advertising” without the‍ schools’ awareness. The group also asserts that ⁣Microsoft is not transparent about⁢ its handling of students’ data and⁤ could be surreptitiously monitoring children.

“Our ⁤examination of the data⁣ flows is quite concerning. Microsoft 365 Education seems to be monitoring users‍ regardless of their age,”‍ stated Felix Mikolasch, a data protection attorney at ‍Noyb. “This practice could impact hundreds of‌ thousands of individuals.”
