Back in 2015, Google launched Project Sunroof, a clever Maps layer that combined location, sunlight, and navigation data to display the potential energy generated by solar panels installed on a home’s roof. Whether it was your house or your neighbor’s, Google mapped it out for almost every house worldwide. This initiative not only helped advance Google’s environmental sustainability efforts but also showcased the platform’s technical capabilities.
During the Google Cloud Next event on Tuesday, the company will officially introduce a set of new sustainability APIs that utilize its AI ambitions to provide developers with real-time information on solar potential, air quality, and pollen levels. With these tools, “we can work towards our goal of collectively reducing 1 gigaton of carbon equivalent emissions annually by 2030 for individuals, cities, and partners,” writes Yael Maguire, VP of Geo Sustainability at Google.
