Epic Games has requested the US Supreme Court to review a 2021 ruling that cleared Apple of violating antitrust laws, as reported by Bloomberg. The maker of Fortnite previously alleged that Apple violated California’s Unfair Competition law by prohibiting developers from directing users to third-party payment systems. In April, the US Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the 2021 court’s decision, acknowledging that Apple’s practices had a significant anticompetitive impact on consumers but did not meet the criteria for an antitrust case.
If Epic succeeds in its appeal, Apple could potentially lose a substantial portion of its revenue. Apple currently takes a percentage of all purchases made through its App Store, which can be as high as 30 percent. Epic Games has been the most vocal critic of this practice, but other companies such as Spotify and Tile are also part of the Coalition for App Fairness, which has been exerting pressure on Apple to revise its policies….
