Engaging Rural Voters in North Carolina After Hurricane Helene
Prior to Election Day, dedicated canvassers visited homes in Ashe County, a region of North Carolina that had been severely impacted by Hurricane Helene.
“North Carolina is currently neck and neck in the polls. The key to victory lies with rural voters. It’s crucial to reach people where they are, even if it means navigating challenging terrain like these rugged mountains. Sometimes, we encounter obstacles like washed-out bridges or missing homes, but we persevere to connect with voters. Hello there! My name is Bailey and this is Ibi from Down Home North Carolina. How did you fare during the storm? It looks tough around here.” “Yes, the water rose above these trees and look what happened to my car.” “Have you made plans to vote?” “I managed to vote last Monday. I made sure I got there.” “Have your housemates voted yet?” “Not yet, but I’m urging them on. Even my son in Greensboro needs a nudge.” “Ashe County may not be a typical focus for political campaigns due to its strong Republican presence. However, every vote matters equally. We are determined to elect representatives who support working-class individuals and contribute towards rebuilding Western North Carolina.”
