The newly appointed leader of the Women’s Affairs Office in the Syrian interim government is determined to empower women to contribute to the reconstruction of a country devastated by years of conflict.
Aisha al-Dibs, speaking from Damascus in an interview with Al Jazeera, emphasized the government’s commitment to involving Syrian women in various sectors such as social, cultural, and political institutions. She also highlighted the importance of recruiting qualified women in healthcare and education.
Recognizing the historical effectiveness of Syrian women as leaders, al-Dibs expressed her vision of reinstating their prominent role in shaping a new and free Syria that everyone dreams of.
She promised to encourage women from different provinces and ethnic backgrounds to participate in an upcoming national conference focused on shaping the future of the country.
The establishment of the Women’s Affairs Office under al-Dibs’ leadership was a response to concerns about integrating Syrian women into governance structures within the new government.
Following recent political changes where opposition forces led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham took control after a swift offensive, Western countries are grappling with their stance towards HTS, previously linked with extremist groups. Despite this, efforts are being made towards inclusive political processes for Syria’s future development.
