A shocking video allegedly depicting the Russian capture of an Australian man fighting for Ukraine on the eastern front of the war has sparked immediate concern from Australia’s federal government.
Identified as Oscar Jenkins, the man is seen being physically assaulted and interrogated in Russian in the circulating video shared on Telegram. The initial source of this footage was reportedly Russian journalist Alexander Sladkov, as revealed by Nine newspapers.
The office of Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong has been reached out to for a statement. It is understood that government officials are diligently working to authenticate the video and gather information about the individual involved. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese cautioned about misinformation spread by Russian forces.
During a press conference, Albanese expressed, “This news is troubling, and we are collaborating with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade to provide necessary assistance to this gentleman while verifying all available facts.”
In response to Jenkins’ distressing situation shown in the video where he appears bound with his hands tied, wearing military attire and speaking English along with broken Russian phrases, Albanese assured that appropriate actions will be taken by contacting Russian authorities.
Social media profiles linked to Oscar Jenkins reveal his involvement in promoting veganism through various activities such as running races and creating YouTube content advocating for a vegan lifestyle. His LinkedIn page portrays him as a Marketing Consultant with experience teaching abroad in China and holding positions in Melbourne.
