Meta has been steadily ramping up defenses for young users of its apps in the aftermath of accusations it put profit over their well-being

Meta has implemented new measures to protect young users of Instagram and Messenger. Messages from strangers are now blocked from being sent directly to young teens. Teens under 16 can only be messaged or added to group chats by people they already follow or are connected to. Changing the setting will require approval through ”parental supervision tools” built into the apps. Meta is also working on a way to prevent teens from seeing unwanted or potentially inappropriate images in all direct messages, including encrypted chats. Content restrictions for teens on Instagram and Facebook have been tightened, including discussions of suicide or self-harm, nudity, and mentions of restricted goods. Teens will now be defaulted into the most restricted settings on Instagram and Facebook. These changes come after Meta faced scrutiny over the safety of its platforms for young people, with leaked internal research showing the company was aware of the dangers its platforms have on the mental health of young people. The changes aim to address these concerns and protect young users from harmful content.
