As technology advances, so do the methods of fraudsters. To combat this, tech firms are now implementing ways to help users verify the authenticity of content, starting with still images. OpenAI has announced that it will be adding provenance metadata to images generated with ChatGPT and DALL-E 3 API, with mobile versions set to receive the upgrade by February 12, as part of their 2024 misinformation strategy.
This metadata will adhere to the C2PA (Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity) open standard, allowing users to trace the lineage of an image by uploading it to the Content Credentials Verify tool. For example, an image created using ChatGPT will display an initial metadata manifest indicating its origin from DALL-E 3 API, followed by a second metadata manifest showing its appearance in ChatGPT.
Despite the sophisticated cryptographic technology behind the C2PA standard, it’s important to note that this verification method only works if the metadata remains intact.
