The business environment is thriving, yet many tech companies are laying off employees. At the same time, other organizations are insisting that remote workers return to the office in the name of productivity. Incompetent leaders are blaming employees working from home for poor company performance. Dell is an example of a business trying to force workers back into the office with the motive of getting them to quit. They are offering a “choice” to work from a corporate office part-time or continue working remotely, but with significant disadvantages for those who choose to work remotely. Amazon Web Services (AWS) has also been accused of using return-to-office mandates to chase away employees. This approach may violate labor laws. Some companies are simply firing remote workers. Enforcing rigid return-to-office mandates risks losing top performers and diversity. Companies are focused on short-term gains, even if it means cutting labor costs. Another approach is the long layoff, as seen with companies such as Disney and Wells Fargo.
