As a former Democrat, I used to view the wall as a symbol of white supremacy. Now, it represents security to me. This year, I made the switch to become a registered Republican after the attempt on Trump’s life. I decided to focus entirely on this campaign and dropped all my fall semester classes because I found a home in the Republican Party. Proudly Latino with dual citizenship, both American and Mexican, I felt overlooked by the Democratic Party as a young man of color. They seem to forget about men like me after elections and fail to understand our struggles and loneliness. In 2016, I initially registered as a Democrat to support Bernie Sanders but ended up voting for Donald Trump when he lost. The Democratic Party seemed to push people like me out by not listening to our voices or concerns.
