Reports indicate that Embracer Group, a Swedish holding company currently undergoing restructuring, has decided to cancel a new Deus Ex game. According to Bloomberg, the developers had been working on this unannounced title for two years. While neither Embracer nor developer Eidos directly addressed the reported cancellation, they did confirm that 97 employees at Deus Ex developer Eidos Montreal were being laid off.
Instead of pursuing the Deus Ex game, Eidos will now shift its focus to developing “an original franchise.” Sources cited by Bloomberg revealed that the Deus Ex game was originally slated to begin production later this year. The most recent mainline installment in the franchise was 2016’s Deus Ex: Mankind Divided.
Embracer Group, which had been aggressively expanding through acquisitions during the pandemic, faced a challenging period last year. The company announced a restructuring plan in June 2023 after an unnamed partner withdrew from a planned deal that would have brought in $2 billion over six years. Axios later reported that the mysterious investor was Savvy Games Group, which is based in Saudi Arabia.
