Passkeys are now widely recognized as a more secure way to safeguard online credentials compared to traditional passwords. Major tech companies like Apple, Google, and Microsoft have all embraced this protocol. The adoption of passkeys has seen a significant surge in the past year, with password manager Dashlane reporting a 400% increase in usage since the start of 2024. Despite this growth, many people are still unaware that they can enhance their online security without relying on passwords alone.
To address this issue, the FIDO Alliance – the group responsible for passkey technology – is developing solutions to simplify the process of transferring passkeys between platforms. Recently, they unveiled draft specifications for the Credential Exchange Protocol (CXP) and Credential Exchange Format (CXF). Once these standards are widely adopted by the industry, users will be able to seamlessly and securely transfer all their passkeys and passwords across different platforms.
