Even with the recent major update of Dying Light 2, firearms continue to be a focal point in the game, despite the franchise’s emphasis on close combat, as hinted by the director. Tymon Smektala emphasized that close combat is the foundation of the game world in the franchise.
In an interview with PCGamesN, Smektala highlighted that while the gaming community has been requesting firearms to be added to the second game, close combat remains the franchise’s cornerstone. The decision to reintroduce firearms in Dying Light 2 was a response to the numerous requests from fans, prompting the team to collaborate with the community to make this addition.
The absence of firearms in the original version was crucial for two reasons. Firstly, it was essential in building the world and reinforcing the concept of a “modern dark ages,” where humanity had collapsed. Civilization and industry disappeared, and the scarcity of weapons, especially due to military seizure, was emphasized. Secondly, we wanted to underscore the significance of close combat weapons for the Dying Light franchise.
It appears that people truly enjoy killing zombies with headshots, and the community’s strong request led us to accept the challenge.
When asked if he regretted not including firearms in Dying Light 2 from the start, Smektala firmly answered, “No.” However, as Techland considers Dying Light 2 the best zombie game, providing players with new entertainment possibilities is also part of the mission.
I believe we took a significant risk by choosing the “modern dark ages” setting, and I am very proud of it. But since we want Dying Light 2 Stay Human to become the ultimate zombie playground, it is logical to offer players maximum entertainment opportunities.
