The Republican leader flew from his residence in Bedminster, New Jersey, to appear at the Fulton County jail on Thursday afternoon, just one day before his deadline to surrender.
Upon arrival, he was promptly processed, which included taking his mugshot, marking the first time in US presidential history that a mugshot has been taken.
The entire process took about 20 minutes. Afterward, Trump quickly left in a motorcade waiting outside the jail. He was released on a $200,000 bond agreement, the highest among all his co-defendants.
While leaving the airport in Atlanta, Georgia, Trump made a brief statement to reporters, denying any wrongdoing and reiterating his right to challenge the outcome of the 2020 election.
“We have every right – every single right – to challenge an election that we believe is dishonest,” Trump said, providing a glimpse into his defense strategy.
