Director of Tears Of The Kingdom Already Has Plans for the Next Zelda, Report Says

After six years since the release of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Switch owners can finally get their hands on its direct sequel, Tears of the Kingdom. With this in mind, it’s the perfect time to start thinking about the future of the series. We’ve already received our first official tease for the next game, which we’ll refer to as TotK 2, BotW 3, or Zelda 16.

Director Hidemaro Fujibayashi and producer Eiji Aonuma recently gave a flurry of interviews, and from these, we’ve received the smallest hint of what’s to come. Zachary Small, a contributor at The New York Times, tweeted that “it seems likely that Fujibayashi already has plans for the next Zelda game—though he hasn’t even told Aonuma about it yet.”

While it’s not surprising that Nintendo will continue working on one of its most popular franchises, it is unusual to see a nod to the series’ future so soon after the release of Tears of the Kingdom. The next game will likely arrive on Nintendo’s next console, possibly a Switch Pro or Switch 2, which is currently scheduled to arrive no earlier than April 2024. As for what we can expect from the next game, not even Aonuma knows. However, there were a few interesting quotes from the duo’s recent press tour that have fans speculating.
