Today, Meta has announced the largest set of improvements to Messenger since its launch in 2011. The most significant change is that end-to-end encryption is now the default for private chats and calls on Messenger and Facebook. This means that your secure communication cannot be spied on by anyone, including Meta itself. After updating, Messenger will prompt users to set up a PIN for message recovery on a new device. The global rollout may take a few months due to the app’s billion-user base.
While end-to-end encryption became an option for Messenger in 2016, Meta is now taking further steps to enhance safety, especially in light of recent scandals involving child predation content. Meta stated that “this has taken years to deliver because we’ve taken our time to get this right” and “to rebuild Messenger features from the ground up.”
