Grand Theft Auto 6 has generated an enormous amount of hype for a game that hasn’t even been fully revealed yet, but it could be wise to proceed with caution when it comes to expectations for the title. Rockstar Games has been known to deliver in the past — the studio’s most recent major venture, Red Dead Redemption 2, is one example of widespread acclaim — which might make Grand Theft Auto 6 seem like a sure bet. Examining wider circumstances, however, reveals just how much potential for disappointment the upcoming title could hold.
One side effect of the excitement for Grand Theft Auto 6 has already revealed itself in the leaks that have sprung up surrounding the game, showing off material from the game from a point where it clearly isn’t ready. The response to these leaks indicates how out of proportion some expectations have become, as obviously early gameplay footage was met with the kind of backlash best reserved for a legitimately disappointing final product. If standards for a work-in-progress are already that high, it’s hard to imagine a finished game that could meet the standard that some of the community has created.

The long wait for Grand Theft Auto 6 has been a major part of the mounting anticipation for the game, with a decade having now passed since GTA 5 initially launched on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Although the time in between has seen plenty of updates to Grand Theft Auto Online, the numbered series has never had a hiatus close to this length in the past. This is far from the only major franchise to slow down in the HD era of games, but few games have had interim periods this long with quite so many eyes on the affair.
