As Danny Jia strolled through the streets of Taoyuan city in Taiwan, he was suddenly startled by the sound of automatic gunfire. The source of the noise was the 249th mechanised infantry brigade of the Taiwanese armed forces, conducting military drills at Guanyin beach. The 46-year-old civil servant was so shocked that he almost dropped his phone. Jia expressed his concern, stating that the exercises serve as a frightening reminder that a war could potentially come to Taiwan in the future.
Guanyin beach is classified as one of Taiwan’s “red beaches,” strategically positioned for amphibious landing assaults in the event of a Chinese invasion. China’s military strategists view Guanyin beach as an ideal location due to its proximity to Taiwan’s primary international airport, located less than 18 kilometers away, and its close proximity to the outskirts of the capital city, Taipei, just 50 kilometers away.
