California is experiencing a resurgence in its population growth after a period of decline. In 2020, the state saw a decrease in population for the first time since becoming a part of the United States in 1850. Factors such as declining birth rates, reduced immigration, migration to more affordable states, and the impact of the covid-19 pandemic contributed to this shift, causing California to question its identity.
However, recent data from California’s Department of Finance, released on April 30th, brings good news. In 2023, California’s population grew by nearly 0.2%, adding approximately 67,000 new residents (refer to the chart for details). While this may seem like a modest increase, it is equivalent to filling Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles with a few thousand extra people.
