A federal judge in California has rejected Elon Musk’s attempt to invalidate a state social media law, as reported by The Verge. The law, known as AB 587, requires social companies to publish their content moderation policies. Musk’s X (formerly Twitter) argued that this violated the First Amendment. However, US District Judge William Shubb stated on Thursday that “It does not appear that the requirement is unjustified or unduly burdensome within the context of First Amendment law.”
X’s lawyers claimed that the law was unconstitutional and would result in censorship. In its lawsuit filed in September, X Corp. argued that AB 587 had the purpose and effect of pressuring companies to remove or restrict constitutionally-protected speech. The company alleged that the law’s true intent was to eliminate certain content deemed problematic by the State.
