Hollywood’s film and television screenwriters have returned to work following a tentative agreement reached between their union, the Writers Guild of America, and entertainment companies. The strike, which began on May 2nd, has now ended. The agreement includes bonuses for writers based on streaming service viewership and ensures that artificial intelligence cannot be used to write or rewrite literary material or serve as a source. The hope is that this deal will also encourage actors to end their strike, which has already caused delays in the release of several movies scheduled for next year, including a Lord of the Rings prequel.
The Federal Trade Commission in the United States has filed a lawsuit against Amazon, accusing the online retailer of employing “unfair strategies to illegally maintain its monopoly power.” The FTC alleges that Amazon achieves this by suppressing sellers on its platform who offer cheaper products elsewhere and by prioritizing paid advertisements over relevant search results, among other tactics. Amazon has responded by calling the lawsuit “misguided” and a “fundamental misunderstanding of retail.”
Meanwhile, Amazon has made a significant investment in Anthropic, an AI startup, amounting to up to $4 billion. Additionally, Amazon has announced plans to introduce advertisements to its Prime Video content starting next year. Similar to other streaming services, users will have the option to subscribe to an ad-free plan at a higher cost.
