Britain’s Urgent Need to Modernize Electricity Grids for Global Competitiveness

According to Bloomberg NEF, for every pound spent on renewables, only 25p is allocated to cables and power lines. This places the UK eighth among major energy markets globally.

Compared to countries like Germany, Spain, and Italy, the UK lags in grid‍ construction due⁤ to its low investment ratio in‍ clean energy versus grid development. The report ⁣estimates that $21.4tn may be needed globally to expand electricity grids for a net-zero future.

The National Energy System Operator manages Britain’s‍ electricity system, ⁢working alongside companies like National Grid, Scottish Power, and SSE. However, regulatory barriers hinder‌ essential upgrades ‌needed for a‍ more robust energy grid.
