A recent report reveals that the UK is falling behind in upgrading the world’s power grids, with a focus on renewable energy projects rather than the necessary infrastructure to connect them. According to Bloomberg NEF, for every pound spent on renewables, only 25p is allocated to cables and power lines. This places the UK eighth among major energy markets globally.
Compared to countries like Germany, Spain, and Italy, the UK lags in grid construction due to its low investment ratio in clean energy versus grid development. The report estimates that $21.4tn may be needed globally to expand electricity grids for a net-zero future.
The lack of grid infrastructure has led to issues like wind turbines being shut down due to insufficient capacity during windy periods. ScottishPower commissioned the report and highlighted the challenges of connecting renewable sources efficiently.
ScottishPower’s CEO emphasized the need for increased investment in both renewables and grid infrastructure to address current shortcomings. The government and regulators are aware of these challenges but must act swiftly.
The National Energy System Operator manages Britain’s electricity system, working alongside companies like National Grid, Scottish Power, and SSE. However, regulatory barriers hinder essential upgrades needed for a more robust energy grid.
