Ken Levine recently made an appearance on the Den Allen Gaming channel to delve into various topics, shedding light on voice acting in his upcoming project – Judas. During the discussion, Levine highlighted a significant issue he perceives in video game dialogues - the concept of “step-by-stepness.”
Levine elaborated that “step-by-stepness” refers to the pauses that occur between lines, a common technical aspect in video game dialogues. He expressed his desire to eliminate these pauses:
Typically, actors record their lines separately, leading to the creation of dialogues with noticeable pauses. Many games have these built-in pauses due to the system’s setup. Breaking away from this pattern can significantly enhance the dialogue quality, even without altering the words or acting, simply by refining the sound editing process.
Levine pointed out that interruptions between characters in games are rare, unlike real-life conversations. Moreover, some actors resist making changes to written lines, contributing to the artificiality of the dialogue.
Levine emphasized the importance of having lines with imperfections and authenticity, as it adds a layer of realism to the character’s emotions. Imperfect speech reflects genuine human interaction better than flawless delivery from a script.
In Judas, efforts are being made to eliminate the step-by-stepness, ensuring a more natural flow to the dialogue through meticulous editing, even if the actors were not recorded simultaneously.
While the release date for Judas remains undisclosed, fans eagerly anticipate its arrival.
