Elon Musk’s X social network made a surprising return in Brazil, where it had been previously shut down, stating that the restoration was unintentional and temporary. This unexpected turn of events allowed Brazilian users to access the platform once again, sparking discussions on freedom of expression and social media limits.
The company explained that the restoration was a result of switching network providers to continue serving Latin American users. Despite expecting the platform to become inaccessible again soon, efforts are being made to collaborate with the Brazilian government for a swift return.
The Brazilian Association of Internet and Telecommunications Providers (ABRINT) attributed X’s comeback to an app update using Cloudflare software with dynamic IP addresses.
Judge Alexandre de Moraes’ order to ban X due to alleged fake news spread by right-wing accounts led by Musk caused controversy. The clash between Moraes and Musk intensified as fines were imposed on X for defying court orders.
Musk’s reaction against the suspension labeled Moraes as a “dictator,” leading to further legal battles and asset freezes. While President Lula da Silva supported the ban, former President Bolsonaro welcomed X’s return online following technical adjustments.
