The former developer of BioWare expressed a wish for the studio to better differentiate its two hit series: Mass Effect and Dragon Age.
In an interview with Edge magazine, former BioWare general manager Aaryn Flynn commented on the two heavyweight RPGs.
We became too similar between Mass Effect and Dragon Age. I would like Dragon Age to be more PC-oriented, like Neverwinter, while Mass Effect becomes a true masterpiece of cinematic storytelling.
The studio’s fantasy series undoubtedly began with the influence of Neverwinter Nights, but with the introduction of action in Dragon Age 2 and MMO quests in Dragon Age: Inquisition, the series, according to common consent, lost some of its uniqueness.
Flynn also recently reminisced about how BioWare developers often started their careers with modding Dungeons & Dragons role-playing games, which may explain the developer’s fondness for Neverwinter Nights. Currently, Flynn is leading the development of the survival game Nightingale.
