Beijing: Taiwan’s Independence Poses a Challenge to China-US Relations

Chinese⁣ Foreign ⁢Minister Wang ⁤Yi and United States National ‍Security‌ Adviser Jake Sullivan recently engaged in discussions to ​maintain⁢ communication between the two countries. Wang emphasized that “Taiwan independence” is the most significant ‌threat‍ to Sino-US relations.

Wang and Sullivan met ‌in Bangkok, Thailand, following the meeting between US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping in San Francisco. The two sides had open and productive discussions on implementing ⁤the consensus reached at the San Francisco meeting and addressing important and sensitive issues in China-US relations.

The White House highlighted ⁣that the meeting was part of the ongoing effort to keep communication channels open between the United ‌States and China. Sullivan emphasized‌ the need to prevent competition between the two countries from escalating into conflict or confrontation.

Previous disagreements ​between Beijing and Washington have centered ​around technology, trade, human‌ rights, and ​the status of Taiwan, which​ China considers part ​of its territory.
