In recent times, there have been claims from various developers that Baldur’s Gate 3 is an anomaly and should not become a new industry standard. They argue that the game, created under unusual conditions by Larian Studios, is unique in its dynamics. It is somewhat strange that even Blizzard employees are discussing it.
Meanwhile, Swen Vincke, the founder and CEO of Larian Studios and the game director of Baldur’s Gate 3, expressed his confusion about the relatively small number of classic role-playing games being created. He wonders if there will be more games that are as big, complex, and polished as BG3.
When asked about the scarcity of isometric RPGs in the market, Vincke responded:
Honestly, I don’t understand it. We have proven with our game Original Sin that there is a huge demand for it. Other studios make their own decisions about it. We enjoy creating these games and find pleasure in it. Fortunately, we are able to finance our development because we sell enough copies. As long as this cycle continues, we are happy. Personally, I would like to see more people making similar games because I would love to play them. But for now, there are not many games like ours, and I hope that changes.
Hopefully, after the release of Baldur’s Gate III, some development teams will be inspired to follow in the footsteps of Larian Studios. We will soon find out if the third Baldur’s Gate will live up to its promises. The game is set to be released on August 3rd for PC and September 6th for PS5.
