The crisis in Myanmar, which began with a military coup three years ago, has prompted Southeast Asian foreign ministers to advocate for a solution that is owned and led by Myanmar itself.
Following a meeting in Laos, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) expressed its support for efforts to address the crisis, including the involvement of a Myanmar official for the first time in two years.
The ministers also endorsed the endeavors of Laos’s special envoy on the crisis, Alounkeo Kittikhoun, in engaging with relevant parties.
After the military seized power and removed the elected government, Myanmar has been in turmoil, with thousands of deaths and tens of thousands of people detained by the military.
Despite ASEAN’s diplomatic efforts and the unveiling of a five-point consensus, little progress has been made in resolving the crisis since the coup.
