Reports indicate that the former head of NetEase’s esports division and the ex-general manager of NetEase Games have been taken into custody on charges related to money laundering and bribery. Along with Xiang Liang and Jin Yuchen, other individuals from the company have also been arrested for suspected corrupt activities.
According to Game Developer, a Chinese news source Leifeng revealed that the accused former employees are believed to have laundered approximately 800 million to 1 billion yuan ($111 million to $139 million). While NetEase has acknowledged that authorities are looking into potential corruption, they have only confirmed firing nine employees due to alleged bribery.
Yicai Global reported that several external parties were involved as well. An internal memo disclosed by the outlet stated that NetEase will sever ties with 27 companies linked to the purported fraudulent behavior.
