Cyberpunk 2077‘s Phantom Liberty DLC already seems to be laying strong groundwork, and perhaps one of the most intriguing additions of all is that of Songbird. Having previously been discovered in the game’s files, some have long speculated that the character would play a vital role in the upcoming expansion, or at least in future content. With the recent trailer finally confirming her part in the game, players may be excited to know that such suspicions were correct – but also curious to know who Songbird really is in Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty.
Of course, Songbird is not the only new character that V will get to meet and work with in Phantom Liberty. Important figures in the Cyberpunk universe, such as Keanu Reeves’ iconic Johnny Silverhand and Rosalind Myers, the previous CEO of Militech and the current president of the NUSA, will play critical roles in the upcoming expansion’s story. Even English actor Idris Elba plays a role in Phantom Liberty, stepping in as FIA agent Solomon Reed. Seemingly, Reed will be one of the few souls V will be able to trust, but Songbird’s identity and intentions are a bit harder to decipher.
In the official Phantom Liberty trailer – which can be viewed on the Cyberpunk 2077 YouTube channel – Songbird introduces herself to V as an “NUS intelligence analyst.” Indeed, the official Cyberpunk 2077 page for Phantom Liberty confirms her prestigious identity, writing that Songbird is a “talented Netrunner and President Myers’ right hand.” Her high-profile position proves that she’s one of the best Netrunners in 2077, more than likely tasked with protecting the President from attacks within the Net. As such, it’s no surprise that she appears deathly loyal to the NUSA, even requesting that V assists in the President’s rescue after she crash-lands in Phantom Liberty’s dangerous new district, Dogtown.
Arguably of more interest to players, though, is that Songbird seems to be a construct like Johnny Silverhand in Cyberpunk 2077. In previous teasers, the pink-haired hacker appeared to phase in and out of reality just like the Samurai rockerboy – and in the most recent trailer, she seems suspiciously knowledgeable about the Relic as well, even going as far as to offer V a cure for their predicament. While the true nature of her form remains to be seen, Songbird being a construct is one of the likeliest Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty theories so far, and the implications of the NUSA manufacturing engrams are also quite significant.
Construct or not, Phantom Liberty’s Songbird is clearly not one to be trifled with. As President Myer’s sworn protector, one of the best Netrunners in the country (if not the world), and someone with potentially life-changing information about the Relic, she’s one that V should strive to keep on their good side at all costs. But until the expansion releases on September 26, who Songbird really is in Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty – and the true extent of her power – are still up in the air.
