Ministers announce air and missile defence projects worth ‍$765m

The Albanese government has announced ‌two air ⁢and missile defence capability projects, as⁤ part of implementing⁢ the recommendations of the defence strategic review.

A statement ⁢from the defence minister, Richard Marles, and the defence industry minister, ‍Pat Conroy, says ⁣the​ government has​ committed $765m to‍ deliver the joint air battle management system ⁤–⁢ the second tranche of what is expected to be ​a multibillion​ dollar program.

The defence strategic⁤ review outlines that an “enhanced, all-domain integrated” ‍air and missile defence capability is⁤ “critical​ in the face of Australia’s evolving strategic circumstances”, the statement reads.

[The joint air battle management system] will​ provide greater situational awareness⁣ of advanced air and‌ missile threats and increased interoperability with international partners.

Conroy said:

I’m pleased to ⁣say‌ today’s announcement will create a significant number of high-skilled secure defence industry⁢ jobs,‌ boosting the local economy.

NT Osprey crash recovery effort begins third day as‌ bodies ⁢not yet recovered

The bodies⁣ of three US marines killed in an aircraft crash are yet to be retrieved as​ emergency services begin the​ third day​ of a⁤ complex recovery mission, ⁣AAP⁢ reports.

Twenty US marines were transferred ‌to Royal Darwin hospital on ‌Sunday after ⁣a military exercise turned to tragedy when their Osprey plunged to the ground on remote Melville⁣ Island, 80km north of Darwin.

A large-scale rescue‌ operation has been under way since‍ the weekend to find the bodies of⁣ the three soldiers and return ‌them to their‍ families in the US.

The⁤ crash ​site was still covered in smoke and emergency responders were wearing breathing masks as they ⁤trawled through the⁤ rubble on⁤ Monday afternoon.

Of the 20‌ hospitalised marines, three remain for treatment with‍ one in critical condition in intensive ⁤care.

Emergency services​ plan to be at the site​ for more than a week as they work​ through what led to the fatal incident.

NT police commissioner Michael Murphy‍ said:

This recovery and investigation ⁤will be prolonged, enduring and complex.

We are planning to ​be at the crash site for at least​ 10 days.
