After 21 Years, TOTK Recognizes the Untapped Potential of GameCube Classic

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is a departure from the traditional Zelda formula, drawing inspiration from a well-loved GameCube title from a different series. Despite its departure from classic series trappings, TOTK still owes a lot to Nintendo’s historic catalog of games, particularly those from the GameCube era. The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess, two of the finest classic 3D Zelda titles, are referenced in TOTK, along with other unexpected inspirations.

One such inspiration is Super Mario Sunshine’s FLUDD, which is similar to Sidon’s power in TOTK. However, the mechanics of water are different between the two games. In TOTK, Link must clean a filthy statue with Splash Fruits before gaining Sidon’s power, which allows him to create a protective bubble of water around him before spraying it forward as an attack. This defensive application of water is absent from Super Mario Sunshine, where FLUDD is primarily used for platforming purposes.

Despite these differences, TOTK has plenty of old-school Zelda DNA running through it, with classic songs, meticulously themed dungeons, and recurring boss fights. While its classic Zelda references are confined to minor details, TOTK plays like a completely different game in the big picture. TOTK is a direct sequel, but with unexpected inspirations and unique twists.
