Addressing Criticism: Stellar Blade Director Defends Combat Animations

Feedback from players who tried the ‍Stellar Blade demo highlighted issues with parrying and dodging, citing unresponsiveness and input delay. Studio Shift Up’s CEO, Kim Hyung Tae, addressed these concerns by shedding light on the mechanics behind these movements.

In an exclusive interview with ⁢the renowned Japanese publication 4Gamer, Kim Hyung Tae⁣ revealed the thought process behind the combat animations in the action-packed game:

In the world of Stellar Blade,⁣ there exists a deliberate delay of approximately ⁤half a⁣ second between pressing a button and witnessing the corresponding ⁢action on screen. This intentional delay is intrinsic to the game’s design philosophy. We deliberately crafted the system so that character movements do not trigger instantaneously upon button‌ press, ⁣aligning ⁤seamlessly with the game’s‌ unique animation style. As a result, the⁢ action is executed upon ⁢input, with the ‌animation seamlessly following suit.

Kim Hyung Tae hinted that if the player community‌ expresses dissatisfaction ⁢with this approach, the studio remains open to revisiting and ‍potentially revising the system in⁢ future updates.

Stellar Blade is set to debut on PlayStation ⁤5 on April 26th. The day one patch will introduce a thrilling “New Game +” mode to the game, offering enhanced equipment upgrades, additional abilities, and a variety of costumes for the protagonist, Eva.
