The recent verdict in the case of the Telegram chat “What to do!” has resulted in real prison sentences for the defendants, ranging from 5 to 8 years, as reported by SotaVision. The Butyrka court in Moscow handed down the following sentences:
Journalist RusNews Igor Kuznetsov received a 6-year prison term (previously sentenced to 3 years conditionally for “participation in an extremist community”, but remained in pre-trial detention due to the “What to do!” case);
Igor Nagibin – 8 years;
HSE student and artist Maria Platonova – 5 years and 2 months with a suspension of sentence during pregnancy;
Dmitry Chebanov – 7.5 years;
Vyacheslav Abramov – 6.5 years;
Ildar Sadriev – 6.5 years;
Nikita Kreshchuk – 6 years;
Alexey Kurlov – 6 years;
Dmitry Lamanov – 6 years;
Alexey Yanochkin – 6 years;
Janna Chernova - 5 years and 2 months.
All defendants were also prohibited from managing websites for two years, and had a year of pre-trial detention counted as one and a half years.
The defendants of the Telegram channel “What to do!” were convicted of inciting mass riots. The investigation alleges that “a group of at least 11 individuals from 7 regions of Russia established a network of Telegram channels with the aim of fomenting unrest during the unified voting days from September 17 to 19, 2021.” One of these channels was ”What to do!”.
