Many games are no longer available for purchase in the US due to commercial, legal, or moral reasons. While some countries ban video games they deem harmful, the US Supreme Court has ruled that video games are protected forms of artistic expression under the First Amendment. However, licensing issues, IP disputes, and censorship outside the US can still lead to games being pulled from the market.
One such game is P.T., a playable teaser for Silent Hills, a Silent Hill franchise entry under development by Kojima Productions. The collaboration between Hideo Kojima and Guillermo del Toro was highly anticipated, but Kojima left Konami, del Toro withdrew from the project, and Konami canceled Silent Hills. P.T., downloaded over 1,000,000 times, was subsequently removed from the PlayStation Store.
Flappy Bird, a mobile game that gained popularity in 2013 and 2014, was removed from Google Play and Apple’s App Store due to controversy surrounding the suspicion that the developer used bots to boost sales and concerns that the game’s green pipes were plagiarized from the Super Mario franchise. Developer Dong Nguyen removed the game due to guilt over the negative effects it was having on players, and Nintendo denied any legal challenge against the game.
