Evgeny Savchenko, the Senator of the Federation Council representing the Belgorod region and former governor, has submitted a request for early termination of his powers. This decision was disclosed by RIA Novosti.
Savchenko, who was expected to serve until September 2025, expressed his desire to prioritize his “health, relaxation, and personal growth.” Having led the Belgorod region for 27 years, from 1993 to 2020, he voluntarily stepped down from his gubernatorial position to join the Federation Council.
On the same day, news broke that Oleg Khorokhordin, the governor of the Altai Republic, had also resigned prematurely. President Vladimir Putin nominated Andrey Turchak, the vice-speaker of the Federation Council, as his successor. Additionally, Vladimir Sharypov, the head of Ivanovo, resigned from his post.
The Belgorod region has been heavily impacted by the ongoing conflict following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Once a thriving area, the region has seen a significant decline in socio-economic indicators, with residents being evacuated to other parts of Russia. Those who remain lament the lack of bomb shelters and inadequate government assistance. According to “Fonar” publication, 191 civilians have lost their lives in the region during the war.
