Protesters in Pakistan are demanding the release of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, breaking through security barriers to enter Islamabad despite a lockdown.
Supporters of Khan’s PTI party clashed with security forces on Tuesday, using slingshots and sticks to reach D-Chowk square amidst tear gas and rubber bullets. By afternoon, many had gathered at the square.
The government has called in the army under Article 245 of the constitution to maintain law and order.
Current Situation in Pakistan
Protest convoys from various parts of Pakistan started arriving in Islamabad on Sunday, led by PTI leaders.
The main convoy from Peshawar was led by Khan’s wife Bushra Bibi and Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur. Bibi vowed that protests would continue until Khan is released.
Prior to the demonstration, over 4,000 protesters were detained nationwide, with mobile and internet services suspended by the government.
Reason for Imran Khan’s Detention
Khan was arrested on corruption charges in May 2023 but released shortly after. He was arrested again in August 2023 for illegal state gift sales and has been detained since then.
The PTI claims that over 150 cases against Khan are politically motivated following his removal from power in April 2022 after a no-confidence vote.
