Poor seatbelt use contributing to Victoria’s deadliest road toll since 2016, Allan‍ says

The Victorian premier, ‌Jacinta Allan, says poor seatbelt use is a factor in the state’s growing road toll.

The Transport⁤ Accident Commission’s annual report shows that the first 10 ‍months of‌ 2023 has been the deadliest on Victoria’s roads since 2016 and the second deadliest since 2010, with‍ 32 more fatalities than during ⁢the same period‌ in 2022.

Meanwhile, the⁤ Victoria police annual report shows there has been more than 500,000 fewer breath tests‌ and mobile road safety cameras‌ in operation.

Asked ⁢whether these factors contributed to the rising toll, Allan pointed instead to poor seatbelt use – with offences having grown by ‌15% since ‍2021-22.

She said:

There’s a ⁢number of factors that are ⁢contributing to the rise we’ve seen this year in the road ‌toll in recent months and road safety⁤ experts have spoken to the fact that [what] we are seeing [is] really alarming, an increasing number of people who are just not wearing a seatbelt.

More‌ and more‌ people who are being detected through the use of improved technology ‌using their mobile phone‍ while driving. So ⁢there’s a ‌lot of ⁣work that goes on in both road safety measures and detection and enforcement

But it also⁣ is really incumbent upon all of us as road users to drive safely. Put on your seatbelt – that’s like the most common sense thing to do, one of ⁣the most important safety measures you ⁤can take when you get behind the wheel.
