Tragedy struck in Gaza as a humanitarian airdrop went awry, resulting in five deaths and 10 injuries. The parachute on the aid package failed to deploy properly, causing it to fall on unsuspecting civilians, according to a witness.
The casualties were rushed to Gaza City’s Al-Shifa hospital, as reported by Mohammed al-Sheikh, the head nurse of the emergency room. The airdrop incident occurred north of the Al-Shati refugee camp along the coast.
A witness described the harrowing experience of seeing the aid package plummet like a rocket onto a house, resulting in fatalities and injuries. The United States and Jordan have been conducting airdrops in northern Gaza to provide aid to the hundreds of thousands of people facing dire conditions after months of war.
However, the government media office in Hamas-run Gaza criticized the airdrops as “futile” and not the most effective way to deliver aid. The UN has also emphasized the importance of land deliveries and urged for more border crossings to allow trucks to reach Gaza.
