Diablo 4 provides hundreds of dungeons for brave Wanderers to tackle, but for the best endgame gear, players will want to complete the Nightmare Dungeons. This is a bit easier said than done, however, because not only are they incredibly difficult to survive, but Diablo 4 has made it trickier to even figure out how to get to a Nightmare Dungeon. This is due, in part, to the Nightmare Dungeons being designed to be accessed only after players have fully completed the story of the game and leveled up enough to adequately prepare themselves to face the horrors that await inside.
As a live-service game, Diablo 4’s success relies on having a good amount of endgame content to keep players occupied. One of the features players can take advantage of and earn incredible endgame loot from is the Nightmare Dungeons. These are mutated versions of many of the common dungeons that players will likely have already seen by that point, but with special Sigils that add Affixes to modify them.
Accessing a Nightmare Dungeon is not as simple as walking up to a location on the map. First, a player must have already reached World Tier III or higher. Once they are playing in Tier III, players must find special Nightmare Dungeon Sigils. These can be found by:
- Killing bosses in the open world
- Completing bounties
- Completing events
- Opening chests in the open world
Once a player has a Nightmare Sigil it will need to be activated from the consumables tab of the inventory. Each Sigil is unique to a specific dungeon that is listed on the Sigil and, once activated, the dungeon will be marked on the player’s map with a special symbol. Players can then travel to that dungeon and when they enter they will find it has been altered from the normal dungeon form.
Besides simply making the enemies in a dungeon harder, the Nightmare Sigil includes Dungeon Affixes that modify the dungeon in new ways. Sometimes there are positive Affixes that help the player, but many of the Dungeon Affixes will be negative ones to increase difficulty. As an example, some of these may include:
- Enemies explode on death
- Enemies leave behind poison clouds when they die
- Enemies deal more damage
- Players take more damage
