Apple has introduced support for Web Push on iOS and iPadOS in iOS 16.4, which was released this week. Web Push allows web developers to send push notifications to users, making it easier for websites to be added to the iPhone or iPad Home from within the Share menu. Notifications appear in the same way as for any iOS app, with the number of incoming notifications displayed on the app icon through the use of a new Badging API. Permission for a Home Screen web app to use this tool is automatically granted when a site is given permission to send notifications, and users can manage those permissions in Notification Settings. Web Push notifications work like notifications from other apps and can be found in the Lock Screen, Notification Center, and on a paired Apple Watch. Third-party browsers are also supported, and Web Push notifications can be configured to support Focus mode. Apple has also created APIs for web developers to control elements of the experience, such as screen orientation, user activation, or screen wake. For businesses, Web Push can help build a stronger connection with clients and may be useful for sites and services that rely on search recommendations. All developers need to do to support Apple’s feature is to ensure their websites comply with W3C standards.
