The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) has granted Waymo permission to expand its robotaxi operations to Los Angeles and additional locations in the San Francisco Peninsula, despite facing opposition from local groups and government agencies. In its decision (PDF), the regulator stated that Waymo is now authorized to commence fared driverless passenger service operations in specified areas of Los Angeles and the San Francisco Peninsula. This move comes after Waymo has been conducting tests with its driverless vehicles in those locations for some time. The decision will now allow Waymo to charge passengers for their robotaxi rides.
Although the CPUC received letters of protest regarding Waymo’s expansion from various entities, including the City of South San Francisco, the County of San Mateo, the Los Angeles Department of Transportation, the San Francisco County Transportation Authority, and the San Francisco Taxi Workers Alliance, it has given the green light for the expansion to proceed.
