Walmart has decided to stop advertising on X. The retailer, which is the largest company by revenue and the biggest employer in America, informed Reuters on Friday about its decision. This move comes after owner Elon Musk shared antisemitic posts and used offensive language towards advertisers who were leaving the platform. A Walmart spokesperson told Reuters, “We have found other platforms that allow us to better reach our customers, so we are not advertising on X anymore.”
Walmart’s departure adds to the growing list of companies that have withdrawn their advertisements from the platform. Apple, Disney, IBM, Comcast, and Warner Bros. Discovery are among the businesses that no longer advertise on X. A group of advertisers informed The New York Times on Thursday that their temporary pauses in advertising will likely become permanent. Lou Paskalis, CEO of marketing consultancy AJL Advisory, stated, “The reputational risk of returning to the platform outweighs any advertising value.”
