The Vatican, under the leadership of Pope Francis, has officially condemned gender-affirming surgery and surrogacy as severe violations of human dignity in a newly released document.
Entitled Dignitas Infinita, or Infinite Dignity, this 20-page document represents the culmination of five years of meticulous work by the Vatican’s doctrinal department.
Published amidst a backdrop of internal discord within the Catholic Church on various social issues, the document encapsulates the core themes of Pope Francis’s 11-year papacy, spanning from matters of war to environmental conservation and social equity.
While reiterating the church’s enduring stance against abortion and euthanasia, the Vatican has now explicitly restated its opposition to gender theory, emphasizing the divine creation of man and woman as distinct biological entities. It warns against altering this natural order, cautioning against attempts to play God.
While acknowledging the potential need for surgery to address “genital abnormalities,” the document clarifies that such procedures do not equate to gender reassignment as understood in this context.
Furthermore, the Vatican’s declaration denounces surrogate parenting, citing its infringement upon the dignity of both the surrogate mother and the child. This stance aligns with Pope Francis’s previous condemnation of surrogacy as “despicable” and his call for a global prohibition.

Additionally, the Vatican reaffirms its opposition to the criminalization of homosexuality, particularly prevalent in certain regions like Africa, labeling it as a violation of human dignity.
Victor Manuel Fernandez, the head of the Dicastery of the Doctrine of the Faith, expressed dismay at the existence of such discriminatory laws and urged Catholics to speak out against these injustices.
