NVIDIA is planning to launch a low-powered version of the GeForce RTX 4090 graphics card specifically for the Chinese market in order to comply with US export regulations, as reported by The Verge. The RTX 4090D is already listed on the company’s Chinese website and it comes with fewer CUDA cores compared to its similarly-named counterpart. Additionally, it has a lower power consumption of 425W instead of 450W.
Most of the other specifications remain unchanged between the two versions, but the reduced number of CUDA cores and lower power consumption result in a five percent decrease in performance when gaming and using creative applications, according to Reuters. Despite the slight performance drop, NVIDIA still claims that the 4090D offers a “quantum leap in performance, efficiency, and AI-driven graphics.”
This decision is a result of US export restrictions on high-end computer chips being shipped to China and Russia, aiming to prevent both countries from developing technology that could be utilized in areas such as weapons manufacturing and surveillance. These…
