Exciting new driver patches have been uncovered by Kepler_L2, revealing potential updates for AMD GFX12 that could pave the way for the next-generation flagship graphics processor, AMD RDNA 3, codenamed Navi 31.
The latest fixes suggest that the AMD GFX12 family, part of the RDNA 4 series of GPUs, might introduce up to 9 shader engines in the top models like Navi 4X or Navi 4C. This represents a significant 50% increase in shader engines compared to the current Navi 31 chip with 6 shader engines.
AMD has structured its RDNA 3 GPU lineup with Navi 31 featuring 16 compute blocks per shader engine, totaling 96 compute blocks, while Navi 32 GPUs offer 20 compute blocks per shader engine, totaling 64 compute blocks.
The exact shader engine configuration for RDNA 4 remains a mystery, but speculations suggest that the top-tier Navi 4 “RDNA 4” GPU could exceed 200 compute blocks, as hinted by Adroc_Thurston from the Anandtech Forum.

The concept of three GCDs, each housing three shader engines, indicates a shift towards chiplets for consumer-level gaming GPUs. Various configurations based on Navi 31 and Navi 32 designs have been proposed:
- Navi 41 with Navi 31 configuration: 9 shader engines, 16 compute blocks, 144 CUs.
- Navi 41 with Navi 32 configuration: 9 shader engines, 20 compute blocks, 180 CUs.
- Navi 41 with over 200 compute blocks: 9 shader engines, 24 compute blocks, 216 CUs.
While these configurations are speculative, they hint at AMD’s pursuit of high-performance GPUs that cater to enthusiasts. The exact reasons behind these designs remain unknown, adding an air of mystery to AMD’s future plans.
Renderings based on the assumed crystal configuration of the Navi 4X (Navi 4C) GPU have also been circulating, showcasing the potential look of a high-performance RDNA 4 GPU with multiple GCD chiplets.
Additionally, the upcoming AMD Navi 48 GPU is expected to feature 4 shader engines, similar to Navi 32, while Navi 44 will have 2 shader engines, akin to Navi 33, identified as GFX1200 and GFX1201.
Details regarding the WGP/CU configuration for the remaining RDNA 4 GPUs are yet to be revealed, but early rumors suggest promising performance capabilities.
