Two powerful earthquakes hit off the southern coast of Cuba, causing damage to homes near the shoreline, according to officials.
The larger quake, measuring 6.8 magnitude, occurred at 11:49 a.m. local time in Cuba, approximately 24 miles south of Bartolomé Masó based on data from the United States Geological Survey. It followed another quake in the same vicinity with a magnitude of 5.9.
The earthquakes resulted in damages to homes and powerlines, triggering landslides in Santiago de Cuba and Granma coastal provinces as reported by Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez who advised residents to seek safety outdoors. “Saving lives is our top priority,” Mr. Díaz-Canel emphasized.
Authorities in Granma province noted partial collapses of buildings and infrastructure damage due to shaking effects without any casualties reported according to Yudelkis Ortiz Barceló from state media.

Seismologists are currently analyzing data which may lead to revisions in earthquake magnitudes while additional information could prompt updates on shake-severity maps by U.S.G.S scientists.
Aftershocks Impact
Aftershocks are typically smaller quakes following a major one within close proximity characterized by minor fault adjustments post-initial seismic activity.
Aftershocks Within Reach
Aftershocks can persist for days or even years after
