Microsoft is joining the celebration of World Password Day by introducing a new way to access your account. The company has introduced passkey support for Microsoft accounts, catching up with Apple and Google after nearly two years.
With the passkey feature, you can now log into your Microsoft account using your face, fingerprint, or device PIN. This method is not limited to Windows but also works on Apple and Google’s mobile and desktop platforms.
Passkeys offer a more convenient and secure login experience. They utilize a cryptographic key pair to ensure that only you can access your account. One part of the key pair is stored locally on your device, while the other part remains on the app or website. Requiring both parts for login adds an extra layer of security against password leaks and phishing attempts.
Aside from Microsoft, other companies like Amazon, 1Password, Dashlane, Docusign, eBay, PayPal, and WhatsApp are also embracing passkeys as a more secure authentication method.
